Default Sales Order Quantity

There are 2 settings which control the default quantity added to a sales order line.  One is global and the other is per user.

The first setting is in System Settings > System Configuration > Invoicing

Called "DefaultQuantity" it is item number 14 in my Jiwa Demo database.  This has been set to 1.

This setting is applied globally.  In the absence of another setting, the default quantity when you add an item to a sales order will be 1.

There is another setting though, in the sales order entry form.  In the menu ribbon, it can be found in the Settings section, under the Other Settings drop-down.

It's called Show Quantity In Search Results.

This setting is applied on a per user basis.  One user may have it ticked on, another user may have it unticked.

The effect of this setting is to add a Quantity column to the results grid of the Search Inventory form.

If the Quantity column is visible, and the user does not enter a quantity, the item will be added to the sales order with a quantity of 0.  Therefore, the 'Show Quantity in Search Results' form over-rides the DefaultQuantity system setting.  It allows the user to specify quantities while appending many items in the one step.  It works well when taking orders over the phone for example.

If an item is added to a sales order without the search form, eg, by scanning a barcode, pasting or typing the exact partno, then the Inventory Search form is not used and the DefaultQuantity setting of 1 applies.
